BOCI International Interns Blog
For the first time ever, interns in the Buckner communications office will be working with interns serving in Guatemala, Kenya, Latvia, Romania and Russia throughout the summer through email correspondence. The international interns, who dedicate their summers to share God’s love with the orphans of the world, will send their stories of an experience that touched their lives in some way the previous week, which will be posted in the Buckner blog for readers in the United States to share in their experiences.

Click here to read the blog and see how God is moving this summer in the lives of not just the interns serving overseas, but also in the lives of children all over the world.

Sheena Brannock, a 2005 graduate of the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, is a 3rd grade teacher at Children’s Community School in Davidson, NC. She also volunteers with Victory Junction Gang Camp, a residential summer camp for children with life threatening illnesses and also with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

After praying and listening to God’s calling, Braddock will serve as a Buckner intern in Guatemala in July. “I’m following the calling to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ and minister to the orphans,” Brannock said.

“Through this experience I hope to become more Christ-like and develop an even deeper passion for God’s children throughout the world,” Brannock said. “I hope to love the orphans like Jesus loves them.”

Brannock plans to obtain her masters of education in while continuing to volunteer. She also hopes to one day adopt internationally.
Michael Evans, from Smyrna, Tenn., will be serving in Kenya in July. Evans is a religion and missions major at Travecca Nazarene University. Among Evans’ favorite hobbies are taking pictures of God's creation, playing tennis and the piano.

“I love kids, and on my first trip I was able to make lots of new friends,” Evans said. “This trip is a way to continue old friendships and make news ones. What better place to show the family of God, than to those how have experienced the betrayal of the carnal family.”

Evans said he hopes to be able to show the children the "family of God so that if (or perhaps when) the family of flesh fails, they know where to turn."

Amy Breitenfeld, from Plano, Texas, is a communication studies major at Belmont University and will be serving as an intern in Romania. She "absolutely loves serving as the New Member Educator (Pledge Mom) for her sorority, Alpha Sigma Tau" and also volunteers at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.

Last summer, Breitenfeld was a Buckner intern in St. Petersburg, Russia and said she had one of the most amazing experiences of her life. "I fell in love with the children I met and God made Himself real to me in a way I had never felt before." She is excited to be able to go on another trip to Romania this July.

Breitenfeld will graduate in May 2007 and plans to continue going to school at Belmont to receive her bachelors degree in nursing and eventually would love to work in a children’s hospital and do medical mission work.

Russia
Benjamin Kail, from Pittsburgh, Penn. is serving in Russia in July. Kail is an economics/business major at Johns Hopkins University where he plays football and is involved in Hopkins Christian Athletes.

“I’ve been drawn to Russia ever since I started reading Russian novels and literature. God has also placed Russian people in my life and I have a calling to minister there,” Kail said.

Keil said that when he first met the people of Buckner he knew it was the right place for him because “they had a Christ-centered vision of missions. They are so genuine in this love for the children and the cause to spread the gospel.”

Keil hopes to minister to the children in such a way that they may come to know the unsurpasing joy of loving Jesus Christ our Lord.

June 2006 Interns
Guatemala
Kenya
Latvia
Holli Deems from Plano, Texas, will be serving with Buckner in Guatemala in June. A journalism and child and family studies major at Baylor University, Deems is involved in Reformed University Fellowship (RUF), Pine Cove Christian Camp and Grace Community Church in Waco. Deems decided to intern with Buckner because she loves to hang out with kids and wants them to know how much Jesus loves them.

God opened the door for her to travel to Guatemala, and she said she feels “so blessed to be going.” While in Guatemala, Deems said “I want to grow closer to Jesus. I want to be stretched and pray that it’s a hard and sweet month as we hang out with the kids.”
Kanika Johnson from Dallas, Texas, will be serving with Buckner in Kenya in June. Johnson is pursuing her master's degree in biblical counseling at Dallas Theological Seminary and hopes to work with at-risk youth in the future. A former kindergarten teacher, Johnson loves children and mentors teenagers, sings in her church choir and serves on the prayer team.

"Buckner has greatly blessed me by allowing me to get involved in the Lord's work via missions," Johnson said. "I had a chance to travel last year to Nairobi and the children there are beautiful, the country breathtaking and the experience itself simply amazing. I would recommend that everyone go at least once to serve on this life-changing trip."
Summer Shaw from Slaton, Texas, will be serving with Buckner in Latvia in June. Shaw recently graduated from Lubbock Christian University with a major in biology and missions and plans to enter Texas Tech medical school in August. She hopes to one day do long term missions work with orphans in an already established clinic or to open one of her own. While in Lubbock, Shaw was involved in the health club, honor society, worked in the church nursery and pediatric clinic, went on a mission trip to Juarez and volunteered with an after-school program.

“I want to spend my summer reaching out to the lost and broken people in the world,” Shaw said. “I have a passion for kids and a heart for missions. I feel like it is what God has called me to do.”
Romania
Russia
Sara Hesterly from Sherwood, Arkansas, will be serving with Buckner in Romania in June. Hesterly, a student at Ouachita Baptist University and a music and Christian studies major, hopes to eventually do long term overseas mission work. “Experience with orphan work is something I’ve wanted to have for a long time, and I’ve heard only good things about BOCI,” Hesterly said.

“My only goal in this trip is to show the selfless kind of love that truly reflects the character and heart of Christ.”
Amanda Goble from Fort Worth, Texas, will be serving with Buckner in Russia in June. Goble, who is working on a degree in biblical studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, hopes to work with orphans and eventually adopt herself someday. Because of her strong passion for orphans, Goble has worked in Russia before and so is already familiar with the culture and language of the country from her previous trips.

"I hope to someday work full time with orphan care and international adoptions," Goble said. "My heart is broken for 'the least of these.'"
