What does an intern do?
Interns are college-aged students dedicated to minister to orphan children in the name of Christ.  They are the all-time servants for the summer.  They are called upon to serve the orphans, the native staff and caregivers, and the short-term groups that come in for about a week at a time.

The key to being an intern is being flexible — each day will be different.  We need leadership in several areas: music, Bible exploration, games, crafts and learning memory verses.   No matter what age child, you will be ministering with your fellow interns through songs, stories, games, outdoor activities, prayer, and one-on-one time with the kids.

The most important job our interns have is to share LOVE!  Get ready to form some really intense relationships with these kids.  They will love you with everything they have, and you will do the same.  Throughout the course of the summer, you will have the opportunity to do a little bit of everything.

Will anyone help us?
Some weeks will be in conjunction with short-term teams.  These are church teams from America's youth groups, college students, singles, and adult teams. When a short-term team is not around, our intern team will lead the week of ministry.  When a short-term team is around, our intern team facilitates their involvement and helps lead the week of ministry, filling in any gaps if necessary.

How will we know what to do?
We will have orientation here in Dallas before flying to your destination country.  You will also have an in-country orientation with the international staff upon arrival.

What is the schedule like?
It is hard to describe a typical day at camp!  Our experiences vary with each camp we host.  Most of our camps will be held within the orphanage itself.  Some weeks we will be staying in a Buckner house or Christian shelter and driving to the orphanage while other times we might actually live in the orphanage with the children.  Our days will begin early around 7:30 or 8:00am with prayer and breakfast.  Ideally, camp will begin around 9:30 with the first session finishing just as it is time for lunch.  We will resume our program for 2 hours after lunch, and have the rest of the day to play, love on children, or drive back to the city in some situations.

How much does it cost?
The internship cost is “Land + (plus) Airfare” and Buckner handles all the details of your overseas travel.  Land cost includes all lodging, meals, cultural events, translators, in-country transportation, travel insurance, visas, bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth, and all orientation expenses (in Dallas before you depart for your country). Roundtrip international airfare is arranged by BOCI for each intern based on flying from your hometown to Dallas, TX for orientation and then on to your destination country.  Interns will work with our office manager to confirm cost and itinerary.  Any airfare/itinerary deviations must be approved by the Intern Coordinator.  Most interns raise support and have found this to be another blessing of going as they experience God’s provision through the Body of Christ.  Information on raising support will be given after the selection of interns is announced.  Refer to the “Calendar, Costs and Deadlines” page for specific costs for each country.

What do I do now?
Application
Fill it out and mail it to our office by the deadline.  Download an application (part 1) and (part 2), or you can email us, and we will email or snail mail you an application. Application is due in our office by January 1, 2007.

Passport
If you do not already have a passport, you can leave that portion blank on the application and wait until after selection confirmation to obtain a passport (it usually takes 6-8 weeks).

Interviews
We will call you to schedule an interview once your application is received.  Selection of interns will be announced in late February, and communication concerning internship details will begin at that point.

One last thing...
We hope this helps you get a better picture of what the summer internship is like.  Past interns have said that they have never worked so hard in their lives, but that they have also never laughed so hard or prayed so hard or loved so much as they did while they were a summer intern.  Read the interns' summer blog at http://internsatbuckner.blogspot.com.
