Botswana
• Conducted our first mission trip to evaluate the needs of AIDS orphans.
• Established partnership with Shiloh Terrace Baptist church and a church in Francistown, Botswana to create a ministry to children orphaned by AIDS.

Bulgaria
• Completed a needs assessment of numerous orphanages and sent humanitarian aid.
• Developed a partnership with the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Education to begin our work there and to set up a foundation.

Nairobi
• Provided funding, training and support to the Baptist Children’s Center orphanage that houses and educates 45 children.
• Began foster care program by supporting 12 children.
• Built two residential buildings and completed new bathroom and shower facilities.
• Completed one mission trip to Nairobi. This trip involved 17 trip participants and 40 orphans.

Latvia
• Completed exploratory trip to Latvia and met various government officials and visited orphanages.
• Sent a container of humanitarian aid to the orphanages.
• Developed strategic plan.

Guatemala
• Completed an exploratory trip visiting numerous orphanages and began program of humanitarian aid and emergency relief to the orphanages there.
• Began partnerships with the Evangelical Alliance, Baptist Association, and Social Welfare Department of Guatemala. The Secretary of Social Welfare visited Buckner to see our programs here in Dallas.
• Hired program coordinator and began preparation for eight teams to travel in 2003.

China
• Began relationship with Urumqui and Changji Orphanages
• Beginning foster care partnership in Urumqui.
• Completed Changji orphanage renovations including: renovated the balcony of the main building; rebuilt the pipes of the heater system; constructed four pieces of wardrobe; renovated the courtyard; connected the sewer; and overhauled the circuit and fixed a loudspeaker in the orphanage. In addition, Tallowood Baptist Church purchased a computer for Changji.
• Built 10-computer lab in the Urumqui orphanage.
• Completed two mission trips to China. These trips involved 41 trip participants and over 2,000 orphans.

Romania
• Two follow-up staff members visited two orphanages and one day center on a weekly basis.
• 10 orphans attend church with staff weekly.
• Trained Romanian social worker at Dallas Buckner campus.
• Moved into new office. Provided much needed aid and renovations to the orphanages and day center.
• Completed three mission trips to Romania. These trips involved 20 trip participants, 4 interns and over 350 orphans.

Vladimir, Russia
• Provided financial support and supervision of 45 children in foster care,
• In addition to supporting medical care and vocational skills training for orphan graduates at Tech School 26, added an additional teacher of independent living skills.
• Repaired roof in Kamishkovo, repaired boilers for hot water and heat in Lakinsk.
• Have one staff person in Lakinsk who provides mentoring to foster care children and orphans.
• Renovated Lakinsk orphanage to create a family center for 10 children.
• Completed one trip to Vladimir. Trips involved eight trip participants and over 400 orphans.

St. Petersburg, Russia
• Buckner Foundation was established and office opened.
• Formed partnership with Ministry of Education, Association for International Cooperation and St. Petersburg University of Culture for Orphan Ball for St. Petersburg 300-year anniversary in March 2003.
• Began foster care program; trained parents and publishing foster care manual in Russian.
• Foster grandmother program initiated at Hospital #15.
• Follow-up team visited six orphanages in St Petersburg weekly to teach a Christian message. They also traveled to Svir Stroi in the Leningrad region twice a month. We are adding members to the team and hope to begin this program in three more orphanages in January.
• Began supporting a pastor who teaches Bible classes at Svir Stroi weekly.
• Provided heating for Orphanage #2, and Svir Stroi.
• Renovated bathrooms in Orphanage #32, #60 and began in Svir Stroi and #40.
• Provided kitchen equipment and beds for Svir Stroi.
• Provided diapers on a monthly basis for AIDS baby home, hospital and #40.
• Provided formula on a monthly basis for Hospital #15.
• Completed renovations for Boarding School #4, orphanage and group home in Veritsa.
• Provided Christmas celebration and gifts for orphanages.
• Sponsored 12 orphan graduates from Orphanage #9.
• Provided financial support for busses and drivers for children at #2 and #40 so they could get to school and provide other urgent transportation needs.
• Completed seven mission trips to the St. Petersburg area. These trips involved 129 trip participants, four interns and over 500 orphans.

Moscow, Russia
• Established relationships in Russian Duma, Ministry of Education, Moscow Mayor’s office, Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, and with Irina Gorbachev and Yevgeny Primakov.
• Established partnership with the Chamber of Commerce of the Russian Federation’s “Foundation for Homeless Children in Russia”.
• Organizing Conference and Gala in April 2003 with Ministry of Education and Foundation for Homeless Children in Russia.
