By Scott Hensley

Scott Hensley, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Tulia, Texas, was one of three members of that congregation to work in Leaganul Orphanage in Targu Mures and a Vacation Bible School-type camp for special-needs orphans near Lapusna in July. During the camp, Hensley helped wash and dry many of the children’s feet as part of a Shoes for Orphan Souls distribution..

I was amazed at the children’s feet. I believe the moment that struck me the most was looking at the little children’s feet as they took their old shoes off to receive the new shoes. You could already see the beginning signs of hard calluses, sores and bunions and that just broke my heart to see that on such young feet.

Drying the feet of the children was a very special experience. They’ve never, as far as I know, had any special treatment like that to where adults could serve them in that way. They have so few moments of special things in their lives, you could tell it really just touched their hearts to be treated in a special way.

One thing that went through my mind is that you see the old and the new in a person when they accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior: When I saw the pile of old shoes and the pile of new shoes, it reminded me of taking off the old and putting on the new. And that is what we were trying to do here with these kids in teaching them about Jesus – to show them that there is a new life if they will but take it. We were planting seeds in their hearts and hopefully they will take on the new life.
